Month-End Moving in San Diego: Why the 28th to the 2nd Books Up (and How to Survive It)

Natasha here from Trusted Point Services. Quick PSA before the calendar flips.

If you've ever tried to book movers in San Diego for the 31st and gotten the moving-company equivalent of "we'll call you," you're not imagining it. Almost every lease here starts and ends on the 1st, which means about a third of the moves we do all month happen in a five-day window. The crew calls it the gauntlet. I call it the week I stop answering texts from friends.

Why the 28th to the 2nd is like that

Pacific Beach, Hillcrest, UTC, Downtown, North Park: pick a neighborhood and the leases all roll over on the 1st. Students, military families, people whose roommate situation finally fell apart. Everyone moves at once. U-Haul trucks sell out, building elevators get double booked, and every crew in the county is working from sunrise until well past the part of the day where you should be making decisions about couches.

How to make it not terrible

Book the labor the second you have a date. For the 28th through the 2nd, two weeks ahead is comfortable. One week is doable but you might not get your first-choice time slot. Three days out is a prayer.

Reserve the truck before you reserve us. The saddest thing we see is a crew standing in a driveway with no truck because U-Haul ran out of 15-footers at 8 AM. If your location allows a night-before pickup, do it. Month-end mornings at the U-Haul counter have DMV energy.

Reserve the elevator. Most Downtown and UTC buildings want an elevator reservation and sometimes a key deposit a week ahead. Your leasing office knows the drill; just ask.

Be packed. Actually packed, not "I'll throw the kitchen in bags while they load the bedroom" packed. Two movers can load a one-bedroom into a 15-foot truck in about two hours when the boxes are closed and labeled. Same apartment, loose stuff everywhere, can turn into four hours. We've all had that friend; don't be that friend to your own move.

If you have literally any flexibility

The 25th, 26th, 4th or 5th are a different universe. Easier booking, calmer crew, sometimes a better price. If your landlord allows a couple of days of overlap, ask. A random Tuesday in the middle of the month is the quietest day in moving, and honestly the best-kept secret in this whole post.

What we actually do, for anyone new here

Trusted Point Services is a San Diego moving labor crew. We don't bring the truck. You rent the U-Haul, PODS or container that fits your move, and we do the lifting, loading, unloading, stairs, and the part where the couch doesn't fit through the door and someone has to figure it out. For an apartment or small house, it's usually the most affordable way to move in San Diego County, and you get the same local guys every time. We also do move-out cleaning and junk hauling, so you can hand the keys back in one trip and go lie down.
